Singapore Mathematical Society Enrichment Programme   Singapore Mathematical Society Masterclasses   Enrichment Programme for Secondary School Students   Primary Mathematical Olympiad Programme  Singapore Mathematical Society Masterclasses Programme   Details  Audience: Secondary 2 students Description: This programme is jointly organized by SMS and MOE. It is a two-day program targetting at mathematically talented students. It is designed to encourage, inspire and engage young people in the art and practice of mathematics by introducing them to aspects, including applications, which may not usually be covered in the school curriculum. Within each class, students are given the opportunity to explore the subject for themselves, either individually or in small groups, with help being on hand if needed. This programme is generously supported by MOE grants. Registration: To be done through schools Enrichment Programme for Secondary School Students Programme   Details  Audience: Secondary 2 to 4 students Description: The philosophy of this programme is to bring real-life mathematics down to the level of secondary schools. We want to tell students that mathematics is not dry and boring – in fact, intellectually-challenging mathematics is fun and not difficult to master! Our approach involves formal lectures, hands-on practice sessions as well as games and puzzles.The style of presentation is tailored to make our materials accessible to students with a good grasp of mathematics at the secondary level. Instructors: All instructors in the programmes are experienced mathematics professors from NUS, NTU and NIE. Registration: Click Here to download registration form or email coordinator Primary Mathematics Olympiad Programme  Programme   Details  Audience: Primary 5 and 6 Description: This 5-day (15-hour) enrichment programme is intended for students who are currently in Primary 5 or Primary 6, and have a strong interest in mathematics. While some of the teaching materials will be Primary School Mathematical Olympiad type problems, the aim of the programme is to stimulate and develop students' creative thinking and problem-solving abilities. The programme consists of 5 topics (see below) and will be conducted in 5 three-hour sessions. Topics: Number theory: Basic number theory concepts such as common multiples, unit digit, divisibility and remainder will be covered. Students will be taught pattern recognition and useful techniques to solve complex problems involving whole numbers. Combinatorics: This is the branch of mathematics that studies counting problems. Students will learn systematic and efficient ways to do seemingly complicated counting problems. Geometry: Students will be introduced geometrical figures such as polygons and circles. They will learn formulas and techniques to solve geometrical problems involving areas and angles of such figures. Logical thinking: Logical reasoning plays an important role in solving mathematical problems. In this session, students are required to collate information and analyse situation to solve some interesting logical puzzles. Arithmetic: Students will be introduced basic rules for arithmetic and some shortcuts and techniques for solving complex arithmetical problems. They will then use the techniques to solve number puzzles. Instructors: Almost all instructors in the programmes are experienced mathematics lecturers from NUS, NTU and NIE.
