Abstract: When I was asked to teach a mathematics module to non-specialist students (from various Faculties across NUS) in the University Scholars Programme, I thought “isn’t this like ‘mathematics for poets’?”  As a mathematician, how would I want a poet to think of mathematics? I started questioning myself what mathematics means to me.  Following a rather steep learning curve, I started discovering aspects of mathematics that I had hitherto never thought about.  I also discovered that mathematics means something very different to different mathematicians and scientists.  How do I want to communicate this to non-specialist students?  I have since taught the module a few times, and this experience is what I want to share with a general audience in this talk.
