Theme of the Essay

“Mathematics in Climate Change Solutions”

  1. The Singapore Mathematical Society is excited to announce our annual essay writing competition. As part of the Series in the Application of Mathematics, this competition seeks to ignite students' curiosity by encouraging them to explore the diverse applications of mathematics in everyday life and its critical role in addressing real-world challenges. This year, we are thrilled to announce the theme: "Mathematics in Climate Change Solutions", which underscores the pivotal role of mathematics in understanding, mitigating, and addressing the impacts of climate change.
  2. Mathematics equips us with the tools to model intricate systems, analyze environmental data, and optimize resource allocation. From forecasting climate patterns using differential equations to designing efficient renewable energy grids through optimization algorithms, mathematics enables informed decision-making to safeguard our planet.
  3. Students are encouraged to explore diverse topics, such as carbon emissions modeling, climate risk assessment, and the application of machine learning in analyzing global temperature trends. Beyond its technical applications, the theme invites students to consider how mathematical insights can drive sustainability initiatives, shape policy-making, and foster innovative solutions for a greener future. Through this competition, participants will delve into the application of mathematical concepts—including differential equations, optimization, probability, statistics, machine learning, linear algebra, numerical methods, and chaos theory—to tackle pressing environmental challenges. By engaging in this endeavor, students will develop a deeper appreciation for the transformative power of mathematics in addressing one of humanity’s most urgent crises.
