Speaker
Juan Pablo Ortega is a Professor of Applied Geometry and Dynamics at the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He holds a first degree in Theoretical Physics for the Universidad de Zaragoza (Spain), a Master’s and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a Habilitation degree from the Université de Nice (France). After a postdoc at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, he became a researcher at the Centre Nationale de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), France, from which he is currently on leave. Juan Pablo started his academic career working on geometric mechanics. His current interests are at the interface between geometry, dynamics, and machine learning. He is a foreign member of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Spain.
Synopsis
Dynamic Processes describe the behavior of virtually any natural phenomenon and most artificial and biological agents, from stock markets to epidemics, from driverless cars to healthcare robots. The problem of modeling, forecasting, and generally speaking, learning dynamic processes is one of
the most classical, sophisticated, and significant problems in the social and the natural sciences. In this lecture, I shall present classical and novel dynamic models, and we shall review their reliability and interpretability challenges through the prism of various mathematical tools coming from econometrics, statistics, or the first principles of physics.
