SMS Essay Competition 2020
“Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence”
- This year, the SMS Essay Competition continues to motivate students to explore and discover fascinating applications of Mathematics in our everyday life with the Series in the Application of Mathematics. We are excited to announce that the theme for this year’s SMS Essay Competition is “Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence”.
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) will define the next phase of Singapore’s Smart Nation Journey, seeking to transform our economy and society for improved outcomes in economic competitiveness and human welfare. Our AI development efforts will be focused in the sectors of Intelligent Transport and Logistics, Smart Cities and Municipal Services, Preventive and Customised Healthcare, Optimised Education and Enhanced Border Security.
- AI and Mathematics are naturally linked. We hope that through this competition, students will discover the different types of AI problems, such as search problem and representation problem, and then understand how mathematics is applied in them. Some examples of these mathematical tools are Linear Algebra, Bayesian Nets, Probability, Discrete Mathematics, Graph Theory, Principal Component Analysis, Regression, Multivariate Calculus, Gradient Algorithms, Optimization, Markov Chain, Transition Matrices, etc., which clearly offers diverse topics for the students to explore.
