SMS Essay Competition 2022

“Mathematics and Environmental Sustainability”

  1. The Singapore Mathematical Society will carry on with the Series in the Application of Mathematics in order to encourage students to explore and discover different facets of Mathematics in our everyday life. We are delighted to announce that “Mathematics and Environmental Sustainability” will be the theme of the competition this year.
  2. Environmental Sustainability, being one of the pillars of Singapore Green Plan 2030 to advance the national agenda on sustainable development, is key to improving the lives of our future generations. Mathematics is at the heart of Environmental Sustainability and plays an important role in our approach to avoid excessive pollution, shift to renewable resources, and protect our ecosystems. A growing corpus of mathematical models has been used to inform and guide our approach in addressing the said challenges, and never more so than in recent years.
  3. We hope that through this competition, students will discover the different types of mathematical models for its corresponding Environmental Sustainability response. This includes deterministic models, empirical models, and simulation models. They will understand how mathematics is applied through the modelling process in constructing effective model for charting Singapore’s green targets on Environmental Sustainability. Some examples of these mathematical tools are Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Probability, Statistics, Discrete Mathematics, Graph Theory, Regression, Multivariate Calculus, Gradient Algorithms, Optimization, Markov Chain, Transition Matrices, etc., which clearly offers diverse topics for the students to explore.
