SMS Essay Competition 2024

“Mathematics and Generative Artificial Intelligence”

  1. The Singapore Mathematical Society will carry on with the Series in the Application of Mathematics in order to encourage students to explore and discover different facets of Mathematics in our everyday life. We are delighted to announce that “Mathematics and Generative Artificial Intelligence” will be the theme of the competition this year.
  2. Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a powerful AI tool that can comprehend and generate new content like text, codes, and graphics. Singapore’s National AI Strategy has detailed initiatives aimed at enhancing the integration of AI in the education, healthcare and business sectors whilst formulating governance policies for the ethical and responsible use of AI. Unsupervised learning models have been used in the generative AI tools to generate new content with probabilistic and statistical semblance to the matched patterns from scanned data.
  3. We hope that through this competition, students will discover the different types of mathematical models to clarify key concepts in generative AI, like hallucinations, self-verification, and chain-of-thought reasoning. They will understand how mathematics is applied through the modelling process in constructing effective model for supporting Singapore’s National AI Strategy. Some examples of these mathematical tools are Probability, Statistics, Linear Algebra, Discrete Mathematics, Graph Theory, Regression, Multivariate Calculus, Gradient Algorithms, Optimization, Markov Chain, Transition Matrices, etc., which clearly offers diverse topics for the students to explore.
