This lecture series will feature eminent local mathematicians or mathematics educators to share with the public some of their interests and ideas.

Speaker

Kiah Han Mao, Nanyang Technological University

Kiah Han Mao received his Ph.D. degree in mathematics from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, in 2014. From 2014 to 2015, he was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Coordinated Science Laboratory, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Currently, he is a Lecturer at the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, NTU, Singapore.

Abstract

Cryptocurrencies have made headlines in 2017, with one Bitcoin’s value rising from 1,400 SGD in Jan 2017 to 17,000 SGD in Jan 2018. Unlike traditional currencies that can only be printed by financial institutions, anyone can produce these cryptocurrencies! One can do so by ‘simply’ solving complex mathematical puzzles. In this talk, we answer the following three questions:
(a) why solve these puzzles?
(b) what are these puzzles?
(c) why are these puzzles complex?
